Painting in Taylors

Taylors sits between Greenville and Greer along Wade Hampton Boulevard, with the Enoree River running through it. It is an unincorporated community in Greenville County with about 23,200 residents at the 2020 Census, and roughly three out of four homes are owner-occupied.

Taylors grew up around the Southern Bleachery and Print Works — today's Taylors Mill — which opened in 1924, ran until 1965 and had its own mill village nearby. Before that, the area was known for Chick Springs, a mineral spring resort whose hotels operated on and off from the 1840s until the last one was torn down in 1940.

Today it is a neighborhood of established subdivisions and mature trees, and the painting work reflects that: repainting homes that have been repainted before, often several times, and getting the prep right on wood, brick and older coatings. DB Painting Services handles interiors, exteriors, decks, trim and drywall repair throughout Taylors.

Taylors homes: established, mid-century and well-treed

Taylors housing is noticeably older than Greer next door. Census survey data puts the median home at about 1983, and nearly 40 percent of homes were built in the 1960s and 1970s alone. Only about one in eleven was built in 2010 or later.

That means a lot of ranches, split-levels and two-stories that have already been through several paint cycles. On these homes the job is less about color and more about what is underneath: old layers that need scraping and feathering, wood that has softened at the bottoms of trim and doors, and oil-based coatings that need the right primer before a modern latex will bond.

In neighborhoods like Pebble Creek, many homes have brick exteriors, with others in wood, stone or cedar siding. On homes like these, trim, soffits and painted brick are natural places to start, along with bringing dated interiors up to lighter, cleaner colors.

Exterior painting under Taylors trees

The Upstate is humid subtropical: GSP averages about 47 inches of rain a year, and July highs average about 90°F. That combination is hard on exterior paint. Moisture works into bare or poorly sealed wood, sun breaks down finishes on south and west walls first, and shaded sides stay damp longer. Good exterior work here starts with washing, scraping, spot-priming bare wood and caulking gaps before any topcoat.

Wooded lots are part of what people love about Pebble Creek and Edwards Forest, but shade keeps siding and trim damp longer after rain and leaves more organic growth on the north sides of houses. Exterior jobs here start with a thorough wash so the new paint bonds to clean surfaces, not to what was growing on the old ones.

Taylors FAQ

Questions from Taylors homeowners

Do you serve Taylors even though it is not its own city?

Yes. Taylors is unincorporated Greenville County, and we serve all of it, from the Wade Hampton corridor out toward Lake Robinson.

My Taylors house was built before 1978. Is lead paint a concern?

It can be. In Taylors it comes up often — roughly 45 percent of homes were built before 1980. Federal EPA rules treat homes built before 1978 as "target housing": paid work that disturbs more than 6 square feet of painted surface in a room, or more than 20 square feet outside, must be done by an EPA-certified renovation firm using lead-safe practices (window replacement and demolition of painted surfaces are covered at any size, and the room limit counts all work in that room within 30 days). If your home is in that range, bring it up at your estimate and we'll talk through testing and how the prep will be handled.

My house has been painted many times. Can you just paint over it?

Sometimes, but not always. If older layers are peeling or the previous paint was oil-based, painting straight over them can lead to failure. We check adhesion during the estimate and tell you what prep the house actually needs.

Can you paint brick?

Yes. Painted brick is a popular way to update a ranch house. Brick needs cleaning and a masonry-appropriate product, and it is a long-term commitment, so we will talk through the pros and cons before you decide.

Do you offer free estimates in Taylors?

Yes. We will walk the project with you and give you a clear, itemized estimate in writing, with no obligation.
