Painting in Greer

Greer straddles the Greenville–Spartanburg county line, about 12 miles northeast of downtown Greenville, right beside GSP International Airport. It has grown faster than almost anywhere in the state: the Census counted about 35,300 residents in 2020 and estimates roughly 50,000 by mid-2025, and Greer added more people from 2024 to 2025 than any other city in South Carolina.

That growth shapes the painting work here. A large share of Greer homes are less than 25 years old, which means builder-grade interior paint that is starting to show scuffs, and first exterior repaints coming due. At the same time, the neighborhoods around the old Victor, Franklin, Apalache and Greer mills have homes that are more than a century old and need a very different kind of care.

DB Painting Services handles both. We do interior repaints, full exteriors, trim, cabinets, decks and drywall repair for Greer homeowners, with clear written estimates and daily communication from start to finish.

Greer homes: mostly new, with a deep historic core

Census survey data puts the median Greer home at about 2003. More than half of homes were built in 2000 or later, and roughly one in eight since 2020. About seven in ten are single-family detached houses, and about one in nine are townhomes or other attached homes.

Newer homes usually come with flat or eggshell builder paint that marks easily, and with trim and siding approaching their first full repaint. In a city this new, that is a very common kind of job: refreshing high-traffic rooms, upgrading to a more washable finish, and repainting exterior trim, doors and shutters before the wood underneath starts to suffer.

The older side of Greer is just as real. A 2017 historic resources survey for the SC Department of Archives & History recorded 856 historic resources in the city built before 1977. Victor Mill's village was laid out around the mill starting in the late 1890s, the first Franklin Mill houses followed around 1900, and Greer Manufacturing, organized around 1909, built workers' houses on all four sides of its plant. Painting these homes means slower prep, careful scraping and the right primer over old coatings.

Greer neighborhoods we paint in

From golf-course communities on the Eastside to the historic mill villages near downtown:

  • Thornblade
  • Sugar Creek
  • Silverleaf
  • Pelham Falls
  • Chestnut Grove
  • Redcroft
  • O'Neal Village
  • Freeman Farm
  • Victor Mill area
  • Downtown Greer

Many newer Greer subdivisions have HOAs. If yours has architectural guidelines, check whether exterior color changes need approval before you pick a color — we are happy to work from an approved palette.

Exterior painting in the Greer climate

The Upstate is humid subtropical: GSP averages about 47 inches of rain a year, and July highs average about 90°F. That combination is hard on exterior paint. Moisture works into bare or poorly sealed wood, sun breaks down finishes on south and west walls first, and shaded sides stay damp longer. Good exterior work here starts with washing, scraping, spot-priming bare wood and caulking gaps before any topcoat.

Thornblade and Sugar Creek homes are often brick, mixed with stone, stucco or siding, so their exterior work is usually trim, soffits, fascia, shutters, doors and siding sections rather than whole walls. Newer homes with fiber cement or vinyl siding have their own prep and product needs, which we match to the surface.

Painting in downtown Greer

The Greer Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1997 and expanded in 2019, covers about 40 brick commercial buildings around Trade and Poinsett Streets. Greer Mill on Connecticut Avenue, built in 1909, was listed in 2022.

The City of Greer's Board of Architectural Review covers the downtown historic district and the downtown overlay district, and the city publishes approved color palettes for those areas based on Sherwin-Williams' Victorian and Arts & Crafts collections. If your property is in either district, confirm with Greer Planning & Zoning at (864) 801-2009 what needs review before work starts.

Greer FAQ

Questions from Greer homeowners

Do you paint in Greer and the Eastside, or just Greenville?

We serve all of Greer, on both the Greenville County and Spartanburg County sides, including the Pelham Road and Eastside neighborhoods. Estimates are free.

My Greer home is about 15–20 years old. Is it time to repaint the exterior?

Often, yes. Homes built in the early 2000s are commonly due for a first full exterior repaint, and trim, doors and the sun-facing sides usually show it first. We will walk the house with you and tell you honestly what needs doing now and what can wait.

Do I need approval to paint a building in downtown Greer?

Properties in the Downtown Historic District and the Downtown Overlay fall under the City of Greer's Board of Architectural Review, which publishes approved color palettes. Check with Greer Planning & Zoning at (864) 801-2009 before choosing colors.

My Greer house was built before 1978. Is lead paint a concern?

It can be. Most Greer homes are newer, but about a quarter were built before 1980, including the mill-village houses near downtown. Federal EPA rules treat homes built before 1978 as "target housing": paid work that disturbs more than 6 square feet of painted surface in a room, or more than 20 square feet outside, must be done by an EPA-certified renovation firm using lead-safe practices (window replacement and demolition of painted surfaces are covered at any size, and the room limit counts all work in that room within 30 days). If your home is in that range, bring it up at your estimate and we'll talk through testing and how the prep will be handled.

How long does an interior repaint take?

A single room is often a day or two. A full interior depends on square footage, ceilings and how much patching the walls need. You will get a realistic timeline in writing with your estimate.
