Painting in Easley

Easley sits about 12 miles west of downtown Greenville, mostly in Pickens County with a small part in Anderson County. It was chartered in 1874 as a railroad town and grew with the textile mills that followed. The Census counted about 22,900 residents in 2020 and estimates about 27,300 by mid-2025.

Easley's mill heritage is still visible: Easley Cotton Mills, Glenwood Cotton Mills (1902) and Alice Mills (1910) all built villages, and the Easley Area Museum notes that most of those mill villages still exist to one extent or another. The Easley Mill itself is now loft apartments.

DB Painting Services paints interiors, exteriors, trim, porches and decks for Easley homeowners, from century-old mill cottages to 1990s two-stories on big lots.

Easley homes: mill cottages and big-lot subdivisions

Easley housing skews older than Simpsonville or Greer. Census-based estimates put about 27 percent of homes before 1970 and nearly half between 1970 and 1999, with about a quarter built since 2000.

In the Glenwood Mill neighborhood near downtown, the median home was built around 1920 — compact houses with front porches on quarter-acre lots. Those porches, posts, railings and window trim are where an exterior paint job lives or dies on an older home.

Subdivisions like Smithfields, Middle Creek and Park West date mostly from the late 1980s and 1990s, on lots of half an acre to three-quarters of an acre. Brick and brick accents are common, and many of these homes are due for exterior trim and siding work and an interior update.

Exterior painting in Easley

The Upstate is humid subtropical: GSP averages about 47 inches of rain a year, and July highs average about 90°F. That combination is hard on exterior paint. Moisture works into bare or poorly sealed wood, sun breaks down finishes on south and west walls first, and shaded sides stay damp longer. Good exterior work here starts with washing, scraping, spot-priming bare wood and caulking gaps before any topcoat.

Many Easley lots are large and well-treed, which is great for shade and privacy but means more moisture on the shaded sides of the house. Older mill cottages near downtown have decades of paint on their porches and trim; we scrape, sand and prime properly so a new coat has something sound to hold on to.

Easley's mill history

Several Easley-area mills are on the National Register: Easley Mill on South 5th Street (listed 2013, now the Easley Mill Lofts) and Arial Mill just outside town (listed 2023). The listings cover the mill buildings themselves, not the surrounding village houses.

If you own a mill-village home, there is no National Register district governing your house, but it is still an old house: expect multiple paint layers, and if it was built before 1978, EPA lead-safe rules can apply to paid work that disturbs the paint.

Easley FAQ

Questions from Easley homeowners

Do you serve Easley and Powdersville?

Yes. We serve Easley, Powdersville, Pickens and the surrounding area, along with the rest of the Upstate.

My Easley house was built before 1978. Is lead paint a concern?

It can be. In Easley, mill-village homes near downtown date to the early 1900s, and many 1950s–70s homes fall in the pre-1978 range too. Federal EPA rules treat homes built before 1978 as "target housing": paid work that disturbs more than 6 square feet of painted surface in a room, or more than 20 square feet outside, must be done by an EPA-certified renovation firm using lead-safe practices (window replacement and demolition of painted surfaces are covered at any size, and the room limit counts all work in that room within 30 days). If your home is in that range, bring it up at your estimate and we'll talk through testing and how the prep will be handled.

My mill house porch is peeling badly. Can it be saved?

Usually. Peeling on old porches is typically a prep problem, not a paint problem: loose layers, bare wood and moisture. We remove what is failing, repair soft wood, prime and then paint.

My house is from the 1990s. What usually needs paint first?

Trim, fascia, soffits, doors and any wood or fiber-cement siding, especially on the sunny sides. Interiors from that era also often want an update from older color schemes.

Do you offer free estimates in Easley?
